A Dream.

Pen Name: Susan Davis

I was playing tennis against someone, and I could not see their face. The sky was dark and cloudy, but it was not raining. I knew that I had to win, and my old high school coach was there. I could not hear what he was saying. No one else from my team was there. I also remember that I kept thinking that I wasn't supposed to be there. I didn't even know what the score was.

I think this dream means you're a very competitive person. When you're in a game/contest you block out everything else to focus. Even if you don't know what is going on you put your best foot forward. I gather you were on the tennis team in high school and you probably put a lot of effort into being the best you could be on the team.

Maybe you stopped playing tennis, but you feel as if you have to keep playing. Or you are still being haunted by a tennis season you did not enjoy. Pressure of winning, and pressure from coaches, is generally negative. In this case it seems even more negative because of the dark and cloudy sky. The fact that you were thinking that you werent supposed to be there might indicate that you really dont want to be playing tennis. Since the person is faceless, it is like you are going against tennis itself.

This dream probably refers to the fact that you are uncomfortable with either the new school (if you are a freshmen) or the new school year (if you are an upperclassmen) since you feel out of place in the situation. Also, the fact that you knew no one aside from your high school coach could mean that you miss your friends and family from home. Despite all of the negative imagery, it is clear that you are a very determined and focused player, and I'm sure you'll win the match.

You are clearly competitive and focused given by your need to win, but also I think there is a sense of solitude and despair. You are the only "real" person there since your opponent has no face and are in a threatening, lonely environment. You feel that you are not supposed to be there maybe because you feel you don't deserve it or are forced to be there. Either way you are battling an unknown without your coach or any support.

The way you describe your lack of awareness about your location, your opponent, and even the people around you, it seems like you could be scared or self-concious that you're being used as a puppet by your coach. It seems like you are afraid that your coach is just shouting orders at you, and you fulfill them. You aren't told about your opponent, or where you are, or where your friends are. Also that it's a dark, cloudy atmosphere adds to the foreshadowing that something rotten's about to go down.

You're obviously a competitive person, but some of that competitiveness may come from your high school coach because the only thing in focus in the dream was him and the need to win. But, there could be some conflict here, because while you clearly felt you needed to win and saw your coach there, you also felt that you weren't supposed to be there, so, maybe you sort of reject your coach's philosophy of winning at all costs.

It seems like you are a competitive person looking that you knew you had to win the game. But more than that you do not have confidence in yourself and in your own ability to overcome obstacles. Perhaps there is a situation that you might need to do something that you are not comfortable dealing with (maybe you are new to college and overcome the obstacle of being away from high school friends and family). Maybe you should try to overcome the fear of not believing yourself and start trusting your own ability to overcome any obstacles you may face. Tennis may have been the theme for your dream because this sport has been one thing you were close to. Maybe you are channeling your current anxiety of some task or obstacle and translating into a tennis match that you are familiar with. Its like putting one situation to a familiar situation you can deal with. It's just that you do not know who your future opponent (or the future obstacles) might be and the score (or the outcome) may depend on how you will play the game (or how you will react to the future obstacles).
