Through ages 0 to 18, a person spends a lot more time outside of the home (school, social settings) than in the home with his loving family. No matter how loving a parent is and how securely attached a child is to his mother as a youngster, experiences in life definitely change the way a person "turns out." Bad experiences such as the death of a close mate or neglect by a bad teacher will cause a child to doubt himself, no matter how loving his parents were in his younger years. Thus, a confounding variable is life experiences. Experiences have a significant impact on a person's life and they certainly change a person, sometimes dramatically.
