I was perhaps 5 years old when we lived in France. I was with my parents at the Versailles palace. I remember wandering in the open courtyard and playing with the little fountains. I remember the very pleasant looking cottages outside the main palace, as well as some of the statues of Greek dieties, most notibly a gorgious golden statue of of a man amongst many grapes and satyrs shooting water from his mouth. I now know that it was the Greek God Dionysus.
I forgot exactly how, but I remember getting lost and falling asleep sometime. The Palace is HUGE so there are endless ways to get lost. I was a scared little kid.
Then I went to a room with an amazing looking painting of my childhood hero Napoleon Bonaparte. My grandfather used to tell me stories of Napoleon, and here he was, in an amazing painting of him in all his glory commanding his men. I was quite attracted to that image, and became less scared of being lost for some reason--perhaps becuase I was comforted by that powerful image of bravery and ability to inspire others and make the best out of most situations

It was in a very famous beautiful palace called the Versailles where some very famous men and women lived.
My identity/personality has changed quite a bit since then. I look different, I am much more confident and less stupid. Also, I've come closer to American culture and beliefs. But I am still passionate about history and Napoleon is still my hero.

At some point in my childhood I wanted to become a dictator when I grew up. Partly because of my love of Ancient Romans, and Napoleon.

The same sort of thing happened to me when I was around five. I got lost in the Seattle Science Center, and was initally quite frightened. However, I was quickly distracted from the fact that I was lost because there were so many interesting things around me ( I really liked science, and still do).
I wonder how much influence interesting surroundings have on experiences like this?
