An alternative explanation that may influence IV and DV is the environment in which the baby grew up, or even after developmental years. They may have been exposed to constant arguments of family members, violence, poverty, etc. that could have influenced their outlook on the world, influencing their relationships with other people. They could have also been emotionally scarred by some event, such as bullying, that left them with mixed-feelings about relationships with other people, making them wary or unwilling to participate in social interactions.
I agree that the environment affects a child's attachment later in life. Studies show that bullying and emotionally memorable events leave a long-lasting impact on development. The attachment a person has late in life is shaped not only by whether or not it has secure attachment as a baby, but also by other events succeeding its toddler years.
I also agree that environment plays a vital role in establishing a child's personality. The personalities of the people by whom the child is surrounded in the early stages of development can greatly influence the personality of the child. Also, issue of socio-economic status and status can play a role in developing the personality of a child, and can shape the way in which the child interacts with others.
I agree that exposure to violence does affect personality. This is sort of the like the nature vs nurture dichotomy. The environmental factors, nurture, helps develop the personality.
