Ruler Lab

For the ruler lab I was able to perform the task fairly well, and my reaction times generally improved over the course of the experiment.  However, there was always some amount of variation in my times.  I do not think these behaviors supports the views of humans as machines; a machine would perform the task with little to no variation.  Additionally, any improvements I made seemed to result because I was learning to react faster.  Neither a series of gears and mechanisms (Descartes) nor a computer has the ability to learn.

I don't fully agree. Machines may not IMPROVE like humans do, but there is still variation. The variations may be less significant than for humans, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. If you get a gun and fire at a target, each bullet will be slightly different and will hit the target in a slightly different spot (even if fired from the exact same spot). Similarly, an older level will sometimes give different results on what "flat" is.
