Earliest Memory Lab

My earliest vivid memory would have to be when I was somewhere between 4-6 years old and I got into a fight with my sister about a toy we were playing with. We were outside and she was using a little tykes car that you moved like Fred Flinstone. It had a green roof on it and I really wanted to play with it. I was riding on the roof trying to get under her skin so I could play with it. I remember her trying to hit me off the roof of this little car and me biting her pretty hard. She went inside and told on me. I was crying and scared because I knew I did something bad. When I got inside my mom yelled at me and bit me.

I feel like this is the most vivid memory I can recall so far back. There might be some other memories somewhat like images but I cannot elaborate or remember anything more about them. I think it was particularly memorable just because of the stress and drama of the whole situation.

I think my personality is similar to what it was then but now I know ways that don't involve biting in order to reach my goals. I feel like this was a young and primal instinct and my reasoning and cognitive skills have developed that this really isn't a good example of who I am today.

Don't worry I love my mom and we have a great relationship today and I never bit anyone after this episode.

I find your memory particularly interesting because at a certain point in my life, these events started taking much more prevalence in my memory, but despite all my encounters with my sisters and cousins in earlier life that I hear about in stories, I don't have any of my own memories of those events.

I really appreciate the learning aspect that your memory shows.

Your memory is very vivid one. I would assume that due to this fact you have recalled this memory on more than one occasion. By doing so you rehearse the memory which allows it to stay in your long term memory which will allow it to follow you throughout your life.

many of the earliest memories seem to be a situation in which we either fight with our siblings or in some way are jealous of them. i think that this may be because they are the ones that we share most of our experiences with.

I also have a bunch of memories of fighting my younger brother for things.

I might be stating the obvious here, but people in general seem to remember events that were more intense in nature.

For me, the majority of my strong early childhood memories are all of intensive natures, for ex. fighting, getting hurt, beating punished etc.

Your mom bit you?!
I guess thats an eye-for-an-eye way of showing you what you did. I fought with my sister a lot too, afterwards it was always a race to see who could get to my mom and spin the story in our favor. My first memories arn't of fighting, but most are of getting in trouble or doing something wrong. I guess anything that made me feel really guilty or angry or alone. they all kind of when hand in hand. I think those strong feelings left an impact. I was 4, that kind of stuff was a big deal.

It is very interesting how there are so many stories, pictures, and videos of events in my life prior to this one that I would think I would remember but cannot. Seeing some home videos of crazy and funny stuff my cousins and I did when we were young, its strange to have no actual recollection of them. I feel that if the same events happened now I would never be able to forget them.

I do feel that this memory did replay it self many times after the event happened because it was a significant learning experience about right and wrong and putting yourself in other peoples shoes.

I think that the sheer fact that we were around our siblings so often when little it is not unusual that myself and many others who posted about their earliest memories included family or close relative.

I have a similar memory about fighting with my brother and i guess these are the memories that we remember because we were under stress. Most of my memories from my early childhood are either when i was under alot of stress because i was really angry or scared. I don't know why this specific fight was remembered but i'm guessing that you were under alot of stress in the moment.
