Earliest Memory - The night before my baby sister arrived

pen name: simopolis

I remember it was nighttime. The entire house was quiet, which was abnormal for a house with three boys. I was in the kitchen standing on my tiptoes to look over onto the counter. Sitting there was a carrot cake with white frosting and orange carrots decorated on top that my grandma had brought. I vaguely remember wondering why anyone would want carrots in their cake. I walked upstairs and in one of our empty bedrooms was my grandma. She was staying over with us to look after my two older brothers and I while my parents were in the hospital giving birth to my baby sister.

Approximate age: 3 years old, with about 14 days until age 4.

Extraordinary circumstances: I had been the youngest child for almost four years and I was finally going to get a baby sister, so I believe that made an impact on me. Also, both my parents were gone, and as a child that young I wasn't used to that.

Same personality/identity: I do feel a strong connection between who I am now and the child in the memory. I strongly know that that was me. It's strange though because I don't feel like I'm the same person as ninth grade me, which is much more recent.

I too had my earliest memory at about this age. However, I think some of the things you remember may be a bit inaccurate. I would be surprised if a 3 year old really wondered why anyone would want carrots on their cake. I think it is far more likely that you saw the cake with the carrots and thought yuck carrots! I don't know if this distinction is important but it seems to me that it may be an indicator that this memory was perhaps fabricated after the fact based on things that were told to you.
