Earliest Memory

The earliest memory that I hold is of something that occurred when I was around two years old, close to my third birthday. It was in the autumn, and I had just gotten new shoes. They were the really cool ones that lit up whenever I took a step; I was obsessed with those. Anyways, I was still growing, and so the new shoes were slightly bigger than the actual size of my feet at the time. I remember exiting the front door of my house, which opened to a small concrete patio and a series of steps. The door swung outward when opened. I exited the front door and was standing there looking out onto the street when my dad began to exit the door after me. I was unaware that my dad was exiting so soon after me, and he was talking to my mom or something and was unaware that I was standing so close to the outside of the front door. When he opened the door, it hit the back of my heel, I tripped on my slightly oversized new shoes, and I fell head first down the small flight of concrete steps. I don't remember the actual fall, but I do, oddly enough, remember watching the door hit the back of my heel and thinking, "Oh no!" But I am pretty sure that I did not actually see that happen. Anyways, I also remember crying and how the tears hurt my face because it was pretty scraped up. And I also remember wanting to see myself in the mirror, but my parents wouldn't let me because my face looked pretty bad. I ended up convincing them that I would be able to handle it because I really wanted to see my face, and I remember looking at my face and being frightened because it didn't look like me at all. Anyways, it took some time for it to heal, but I eventually got better and came out of the incident with no permanent scars or anything.

I do actually feel a slight but definite disconnect with the person that I was then. That memory is mine, but I do not really feel like I am the same person that fell down the steps that day. I have just had so many experiences since then, and I am completely certain that my worldview, my understanding of myself, and even my personality has significantly shifted since then.

I think this is really interesting just because I can't remember anything before I was like, 5. I'm impressed by the amount of details you can recall even though you were so young when this happened.
