earliest memory...I don't like mustard

I remember being very young--before school--and being home with my mother and my twin sister. I suppose I was 3 or 4.

My sister liked mustard and was eating a bologna sandwich with mustard. I did not like mustard but wanted to try it. My mother warned me that if I got mustard on my sandwich I would have to eat it. I was afraid, but I asked for it any way. After the first bite I thought I would throw it up, but I didn't want to get in trouble so I hid in the bottom of the linen closet next to the laundry chute. That was scary.

I don't know how long I was there; it seems like forever now. I was crying and afraid that I would be in trouble, but my mother relented and let me eat crackers and cheese.

I was pretty intimidated when I was younger, and my mom could really let me have it. I felt powerless when I was little, so I am really glad I feel confident and strong as an adult.

Oh, and I love mustard now.

That is a pretty cool memory. I have to say though that hiding in the linen closet would still be pretty scary even now! I think that for us it's easier for us to remember big events or what seemed to be large tragedies or successes at the time so maybe you remember this so well because it was such a big deal when you were so young.
