1. What is the purpose of the "scale anchoring" process? What does the NAEP's scale do and what are the guidelines used to select the questions for it?

2. What are the five performance levels and what are the requirements to attain each level?

3. There are 5 performance levels available for all 3 age groups, but how many performance levels are discussed for each age? What do students still need to develop in each performance level?

4. Analyze the graphs for the NAEP Performance Levels By Gender for age 9, age 13, and age 17. What are some things you notice between the genders in each age group?

5. Why is there such a significant gap between black and Hispanic and white scale scores?

6. Why do you think the scale scores of Hispanics and blacks increased more than the scores of whites from 1978 to 2004?

7. Why do you think the percentage of blacks scoring at or above 250 has increased so rapidly from 1978 to 1999 to 2004?  Why wasnt there as big of a change in whites?

8. Do you think parents' level of education should affect students' average scale score? Why or why not?

9. Compare how the parents' level of education affects 13 year old students. What are some characteristics you find from the graph? Is it similar to the graph of 17 year old parents and students? How does it differ?
