Earliest Memory Lab

I don't know if this is a real memory, because I've heard that people can construct what they believe are memories out fo stories they've heard. But my earliest memory is my first birthday, sitting in my high chair, and diving into the chocolate cake my parents recklessly left on the high chair as they went into the garage. At one years old however, I don't see how this could possibly be a valid memory. The story seems to match up, and there's even a home video that matches my point of view. But I could have seen that video in the past, and created the memory from what I thought I saw. Being as I was 1 year old, I could barely think and therefore I would admit that my personality now is slightly different than then. My earliest memory that I can relate to conciously happened around age four, as I waved goodbye to my dad from the dining room window.

I think that you probably formulated memory from your first birthday because obviously the story has been told to you. Even more so, the home video of the event gives a visual representation of what happened, meaning that you didn't fabricate it yourself. For this reason it may seem more like a memory because you did not entirely visually build it based on the story you heard.

It is very possible that this is at least partially a real memory, because my first memory is from when I was around a year old too. I agree though that the home video and the story could have enhanced this memory more, fabricating parts of it, and at one year old, this memory probably should not be so vivid, because from reading other people's posts who also have memories at 1 year old, it is a simple, hazy memory, and nothing exciting really happens.
