A major alternative variable would be the environment in which the child was raised in. For example, a child raised in a rough neighborhood with little to eat and terrible living conditions will fare worse than a child raised in a wealthy neighborhood with no food or financial issues. Another variable would be the fact that a child with two parents may not necessarily become attached to both. If the child is securely attached to one parent, but is terrified of the other, this creates an instability in the child's mind, therefore changing the way he will turn out in the future.
